Visions: The Academic 'Library' in 2012

Faced with the complex of uncertainties triggered by technological, cognitive, and social change, what form might – or should – emerge for the academic "library" a decade from today? Originality and insight that challenges conventional thinking and informs future decision-making in the library-information world is the desired product.

  • $2500 in prize(s)
  • Double-blind reviewing
  • 1000 word paper or 15 minute "presentation"
  • Cover page with personal information and 100 word abstract (required)
  • Electronic submission expected
  • Deadline for full papers: 19 October 2002

Questions welcome; notification of "intent to submit" encouraged. Contact:

Scenarios of future realities that must be addressed are encouraged. A symposium on this issue is being planned. Submissions will be considered for presentation at the symposium and for an edited volume under negotiation. This is a unique opportunity for librarians, interested stakeholders, and futurists to share predictions and learn possible future directions for the library and information services professions.

ADDITIONAL GUIDELINES

1. Each vision should be:

a) cogent (convincing; compelling; pertinent; relevant)

b) coherent (consistent; without contradiction)

c) concrete, (visual description)

e) include assumptions (all key inside & outside trends/factors) affecting academic libraries.

f) each vision should be for a specific institution, real or imagined.

2. The title should describe the real essence of the vision: no more than 8 words.

3. Any (or all) papers will be "published" on a common web site at the discretion of the organizers.

4. This project is open to any current member of the academic (and futurist) communities (students, faculty, staff) and not limited to librarians.

5. The jury will include both distinguished visionary academics as well as librarians. The organizers (Marcum and Bowman) will not be among the readers/jury.

6. Every paper will be read and ranked by more than one reader, each of whom can put proposals forward for the next round of evaluation. All "finalists" will be considered by the larger panel of readers.

7. FDU and/or the ACRL New Jersey and the author(s) have non-exclusive distribution rights for all submitted papers which may include but not be limited to making these papers publicly available on the web from one or more sites. FDU and/or the ACRL New Jersey shall make such papers available freely and not charge in the interest of untrammeled scholarly access.

8. FDU and/or ACRL New Jersey may hold related symposiums, for a fee, in which such papers may be presented or made available for discussion.
