Trans-Atlantic KnightsPrior to the 2001 season, the Fairleigh Dickinson University men’s soccer team traveled to England to take on five of the top English men’s club teams in the London area in preparation for defense of its Northeast Conference title. “It was a tremendous experience, athletically, culturally and socially for our team,” said Head Coach Seth Roland, T-H. “It enabled the student-athletes to bond closely on and off the field and gave us a chance to train earlier in the year.”According to NCAA rules, collegiate teams are permitted to compete overseas once every four years. This was the soccer squad’s first such trip under Roland and another illustration of the University’s renewed emphasis on providing a global education. The Knights fared well on their English tour, returning home 3-2 on the trip against excellent competition. The team also visited historic sites and popular attractions such as Buckingham Palace, Big Ben and the Tower of London. They had planned to visit FDU’s Wroxton College, but the campus was closed that week. |
