Fitness Center on Drawing Board

From the Flag Circle, the facade may look familiar, but the Fitness Center that will be transformed from the “Old Gym” will be a new and much anticipated addition to the Teaneck-Hackensack Campus.
The building will retain its brick facing and doorway on the Flag Circle, but from the North Parking Lot, the main entrance to the center will take on an all-new look. Generous walls of glass will light up the interior; by night, the building will be bright and welcoming as the glass walls allow views through the space and up into the trussed roof.

Designed to be a magnet for students and available for faculty and staff, the facility will offer a large central court for a “pick-up” basketball game or volleyball. The free-weight room and the selectorized weight room will bracket a large space devoted to cardiovascular exercise equipment. Directly across the basketball court from the lobby, the aerobics and dance studio will boast a wall of mirrors. At the main entrance, which faces Robison Hall, the receptionist’s area will be flanked by locker rooms with showers.

Through focus and user groups, a fitness center emerged as a high priority for the Teaneck-Hackensack Campus, but an upgraded commuter lounge was also a key element on the wish list. The center fulfills both requests, as a spacious commuter lounge — spanning the entire end wall of the building — will be included. Joseph Kiernan, assistant campus provost, T-H, said “The center borders the large North Parking Lot, so it’s an ideal location for a commuter lounge.”
Renovations will begin in November, and the target date for completion of the $3.5-million project is late spring 2002. The next step is to present the plans to the Teaneck Planning Board for approval.

According to Kiernan, some demolition work has begun, and the process is not as complex as erecting a new building. “A renovation is faster in both the approval process and the construction process,” he said. “This is one of the reasons we have chosen to move ahead with the project. Another reason is that we have an unused building that we want to see revitalized as soon as possible.”
