Steinke Named Editor in Chief of Review

Rene Steinke, English, F-M, has been appointed editor-in-chief of The Literary Review, FDU’s creative writing journal. She takes over for Walter Cummins, emeritus, English, F-M, who held the position since 1984 and has been named editor emeritus.

Steinke, a novelist and poet with editorial experience on other literary magazines, is the recipient of an Academy of American Poets prize and three PSC-CUNY Research Foundation awards for creative writing. Her book reviews have appeared in Newsday and The Cresset, and she has been a poetry editor for The Cresset and for Cream City Review. Her poems and stories have appeared in TriQuarterly, Southern Poetry Review, Cumberland Poetry Review, Sundog and Carolina Quarterly

Steinke’s first novel, The Fires, came out in 1999 and has since been published in paperback and featured on National Public Radio’s “Weekend All Things Considered.” The Fires was selected by The Austin Chronicle as one of the best books of 1999, and the film rights have since been optioned by Madonna’s production company, in partnership with Handprint Entertainment. Steinke is currently at work on her second novel, Holy Skirts.

During his tenure as editor-in-chief, Walter Cummins increased circulation of The Literary Review and obtained governmental and private agency grants to support translation issues, special projects and design innovations. He expanded the journal’s global focus by attracting distinguished guest editors from around the world to organize issues devoted to a variety of literatures and cultures. TLR also gained a strong online presence with its own site (http://theliteraryreview.org) and Web Del Sol (www.webdelsol.com), a site devoted to the promotion of literature. He will continue his work with the online presence of the journal, as well as his work in the MFA program at FDU and his own short story writing.
