Visiting Writers Hold Readings

During the week of January 13, five acclaimed writers gave free public readings of their works on the Florham-Madison Campus. Participants included Robert Polito, Francine Prose, Sapphire, Darcey Steinke and Gerald Stern.The readings included an audience question-and-answer period. 

Robert Polito, winner of the National Book Critics Circle Award and the author of works of poetry and nonfiction including Savage Art: A Life of Jim Thompson, is the editor of Crime Novels: American Noir Novels of the 1930s, 1940s, 1950s. A recipient of Guggenheim and Ingram Merrill fellowships, he directs the writing programs at The New School University, N.Y.C.

The author of 11 highly praised novels, Francine Prose’s most recent novel, Blue Angel, was a finalist for The National Book Award. Her other works include the novella collection Guided Tours of Hell and two short story collections. 

Darcey Steinke, author of three enthusiastically received novels, Suicide Blonde, Up Through the Water and Jesus Saves, has been awarded a Wallace Stegner Fellowship and the Grisham Southern Writer-in-Residence Endowment. She is co-editor of Joyful Noise: The New Testament Revisited.

Gerald Stern has received The National Book Award for Poetry for This Time and is the winner of the Ruth Lilly Poetry Prize. His other books of poetry include Leaving Another Kingdom, Last Blue and Bread Without Sugar. 

Sapphire, the author of Push, received the Book-of-the-Month Club Stephen Crane Award for First Fiction and the Black Caucus of the American Library Association’s First Novelist Award. She also is the author of American Dreams, a collection of poems.

The readings were part of the University’s MFA in creative writing program. Students meet twice yearly to discuss their work and participate in discussions, seminars and lectures. During these residency periods, visiting writers interact with the students in the graduate program, discuss their work and teach master’s classes.
