FDU · news and publications · calendar of events · help 59th Commencement, May 21, 2002The 59th Commencement exercises will be held in the Continental Airlines Arena on Tuesday, May 21, beginning at 10 a.m. Serving as grand marshal will be Antoinette Anastasia, biological sciences, T-H. During the ceremony, honorary doctor of humane letters degrees will be awarded to African novelist Chinua Achebe; award-winning photographer Steve McCurry; Peter Falley, retiring Florham-Madison Campus provost; and Paula Dobriansky, under secretary of state for global affairs. (Detailed information about the honorees appeared in a recent press release.) Dobriansky will deliver the keynote address. More than 2,400 candidates will receive associate’s, baccalaureate, master’s and doctoral degrees. The campus provosts will present the Student Pinnacle awards. Falley will present his campus’s award to Ann Lynn Mizenko. Enrolled in a five-year combined degree program, Mizenko earned her BS in business management and is continuing toward her MA in corporate and organizational communication/MBA in management. She has been active in student government, recently serving as senior senator, and in her sorority, Theta Phi Alpha. An orientation leader, she served as a student assistant in the Office of Admissions and a resident assistant for freshmen. The Student Pinnacle at Teaneck-Hackensack will be presented to Mira Thakkar by Interim Teaneck-Hackensack Campus Provost Richard Bronson. A business management major with a concentration in management information systems, Thakkar is a member of the University Honors Program and recently was selected to make a presentation at the Eastern Regional Honors Conference. A resident assistant, she has been active with FDU’s Indian Cultural Experience as well as other cultural associations. Readers will be Jennifer Lehr, English/communication, F-M, and Joseph Kiernan, economics/finance and assistant campus provost, T-H. Candidates for graduation and faculty and staff must arrive at the arena no later than 8:30 a.m. Marshals must arrive at 8 a.m. For security reasons, backpacks and large bags will not be permitted within the arena. All should enter the arena between Gates A and D and proceed on the escalators to the arena floor level. There, signs will be posted for faculty robing rooms and for volunteers to receive instructions. Students will be lined up on the arena floor level according to degree and by college. All graduates will have their names called and will walk across the stage and shake hands with President J. Michael Adams. Photographs will be taken of each graduate. The ceremony should end by 1 p.m. Graduates will be able to pick up their diplomas in the Offices of Enrollment Services starting June 5 or diplomas will be mailed to the graduates’ homes, if preferred. Faculty and staff must return their academic regalia to their respective campus bookstores no later than Tuesday, May 28. Charges will be incurred if the regalia is not returned on time. Teaneck-Hackensack bookstore hours are Monday and Thursday, 9 a.m. to 6 p.m.; Tuesday and Wednesday, 9 a.m. to 7 p.m, and Friday 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. The Florham-Madison bookstore is open Monday to Thursday, 9 a.m. to 7 p.m; Friday, 9 a.m. to 4 p.m; and Saturday, 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. |
