Communication Programs Growing at FDU

As the corporate communication professional has become indispensable to the world of business, the people who hold or desire such positions must grow and develop as well. The Corporate Communication Institute’s (CCI) 2005 study found that “Communication managers are more mature, better paid and smarter,” reports Michael Goodman, CCI director. “More of them have advanced degrees, such as master’s or PhDs.” FDU is responding by expanding its opportunities in the field.

The University most recently added the MA in media and professional communication program at the Metropolitan Campus, approved in 2005 by the state of New Jersey. This applied professional program is designed to present the latest developments in such areas as gender and diversity issues, intercultural communication, writing techniques, résumé preparation and oral presentation.

FDU’s MA in corporate and organizational communication program at the College at Florham produces “critically informed and creative graduates who will be competitive contributors to a challenging global workplace.” The program emphasizes critical-thinking, problem-solving, oral-presentation and writing skills.

A unique feature is the program’s overseas course, International Corporate Communication and Culture, initiated in 1992 by Goodman. The two-week intensive experience in England is based at the University’s Wroxton College. Speakers are drawn from British and European corporations, media outlets and public relations/marketing firms as well as from British government agencies and industrial groups.

The MA program may be combined with a master of business administration degree, providing an excellent background for those wishing to rise in their corporations and influence top management.

On the undergraduate level, the College at Florham offers a BA in communication studies within which students may select a concentration in organizational communication; or, the BA may be rolled into a five-year joint degree program with the MA in corporate and organizational communication.

The undergraduate communication major (BA) on the Metropolitan Campus offers a wide range of media-centered courses and emphasizes internships for first-hand experience in fields such as public relations, advertising, journalism, television and talent representation.
