Inspired to Advance

Vanessa Gross is working on an MPA through an off-campus Petrocelli College program in Jersey City, N.J. She joined the National Guard while studying criminal justice at Rutgers-Newark and was deployed to Iraq from September 2008 to June 2009, serving as a military police officer. Her commitment to the guard ends in 2012.

While attending the Jersey City Police Academy, she was motivated by FDU adjunct faculty member Rhudell Snelling, who gave the cadets a pep talk about advancing their education. Currently a Hudson County sheriff’s officer, Gross began taking FDU classes in fall 2009 and will finish at the end of 2011.

What she loves about her FDU classes, she says, is that they are taught by professionals like Snelling, a Jersey City police officer, who have actually done the job they are teaching others to do. “They are getting me ready for problems that I’m going to be able to handle.”

Gross says that her classes have been so inspiring that when she leaves law enforcement, she wants to be a professor teaching criminal justice or sociology in order to help others learn from her real-world experience as well.

Joe Fullam, the Air Force veteran, acknowledges that he was not ready for college right after high school. “I would have flunked out in a month,” he says. After he left the military and was laid off from his mechanic’s job two years later, he considered taking a few classes at the local community college. A tip from his grandmother to check out FDU led to his decisive meeting with Luna.

In addition to qualifying for a Yellow Ribbon scholarship, he was granted 13 credits for his military experience, and he hopes to finish his bachelor’s degree in less than four years. He picked criminal justice, he says, because “it’s what I know, and it pays well.” Fullam says his dream is to eventually earn a master’s degree in homeland security from FDU or become a Drug Enforcement Administration agent: “It’s good guys versus bad guys, and I’ve always liked that.”
