Up Close with Nicholas D.J. Baldwin

In 1984, Nicholas Baldwin joined FDU’s Wroxton College as lecturer and tutor in British government and politics. The following year, he was appointed head of the college, and this year the Wroxton College dean and director of operations celebrates his 25th anniversary managing all aspects of campus life. In addition, he has continued to carry a full schedule of courses teaching British government and politics.

Baldwin says he accepted the position “because it was a challenge and because I believed I had something offer.” He is most proud of “the academic development and subsequent achievements of some of the students I have taught.”

An authority on Parliament, Baldwin is a member of the prestigious Study of Parliament Group and an associate of the Centre for Legislative Studies. His publications include Beyond Settlement: Making Peace Last After Civil Conflict (with Vanessa Shields, BA'03 [M]), Mastering British Politics (with F.N. Forman) and Parliament in the Twenty-First Century.

Baldwin obtained a BA degree in special politics from the University of Hull in 1979 and was later awarded his doctorate from the University of Exeter, for which he focused on the contemporary House of Lords. While at Exeter, he began lecturing on politics. He served as special assistant to the Liberal Party Peers in the House of Lords in the early 1980s, and in 1983 he was a parliamentary candidate for the Liberal/Social Democratic Party (SDP) Alliance.
