President's Welcome

From Dr. Adams, a global welcome

We reside in an increasingly smaller global village, characterized by stunning rates of change and remarkable diversity, interconnected by technology and human beings increasingly aware of our common fate. Fairleigh Dickinson University's global mission recognizes that we all are global participants who need to be sufficiently agile to respond to profound changes; that our arena is the world marketplace of ideas; and that our responsibility is to prepare students to live, succeed and solve problems anywhere in the world.

To that end we are offering cutting edge programs and a wealth of intercultural, international and global experiences. We are partnering with institutions here and abroad; we are working closely with leaders in business, government and the arts; we are making significant investments in our technological capabilities and our living and learning environment; and we are adding new chapters to a university rich in global traditions.

A global education is much more than studying abroad. Of course it must provide knowledge and understanding of culture, language, geography and global perspectives. But, most importantly, a global education enables students to understand their roles in a global community and teaches them how their actions can affect others throughout the world. In short, education that is global allows students to understand what it means to be a citizen of the world.

The leaders of tomorrow must be prepared to think and act globally. We pledge to graduate students who will flourish in this brave new world. We pledge to graduate global citizens who can cross boundaries and make connections with people from different backgrounds and those with different worldviews. It is these connections that represent the best chance for professional growth and personal fulfillment. It is these connections that can help us respond to international challenges and crises. And it is these connections that will make the world a better place.
