Learning from the brandnames

  • When you get there, you're there 
  • Focus on the visible part of the page 
  • Multiple navigation schemes 
  • Fixed width, usually less than 600 pixels 
  • Multicolumn structure 
  • Consistent page layout 
  • Mostly text, small graphics 
  • White background 

    • First questions

  • Frequent flyers? 
  • Where from? 
  • What action? 
  • What equipment? 

    • Web design challenges

  • Coping with rectangles 
  • Fonts and font sizes 
  • Advertising banners 

    • Don't ever do this

  • Structure-less page 
  • Bad graphics 
  • Hit counter 
  • Underline if not a link 
  • URL or email address not live 
  • Text with no margin 
  • Newspaper column snaking
  • Animation for animation's sake 
  • Background for background's sake 
  • "Under Construction" 
  • Spelling and grammar errors 

    • How do they do that?

  • Text can be highlighted 
  • Graphics can be right-clicked to determine gif vs. jpg 
  • Motion on page can be: animated gif, java, active-x, DHTML
  • URL extensions: htm=HTML, html=HTML, asp=Active Server Pages, pl=Perl, exe=usually Visual Basic or C++, cfm=Cold Fusion
