Setting up a web page at FDU
|
| For greatest control over the look of your page, build it yourself! |
Personal Pages on alpha.fdu.eduIndividuals who are members of the FDU community --: students, faculty, staff, alumni -- all have the privilege of having their web pages hosted on university computer systems at no charge. Currently alpha.fdu.edu is the computer assigned this role. Although this gives the greatest flexibility in design of your pages, it requires the greatest investment of your time and talent. You must master at least one web page authoring software tool, as well as a file transfer software tool to upload your newly-created pages to the alpha server. Telnet software is also required, once during site setup, and again each time your alpha password needs to be updated. |
| A good-looking page can
be created in as little as 10 minutes, but the page's format is limited.
Pagetoaster is currently available for use by faculty, staff, and alumni, and by student organizations. Resources needed for Pagetoaster use by students are under study. |
PagetoasterThe FDU Pagetoaster automates the creation of a web page. On the faculty, staff and alumni web page listings, you can see that hundreds of individuals have had success with Pagetoaster. Although the format of the page is fixed, the author of each page can selectRather than forcing you to learn the complexities of HTML, FTP,
and directory structures; or settle for a simple, less functional page,
Pagetoaster captures your content by allowing you to fill out a form.
|
| Every page created in Pagetoaster or Pagetoaster 2 has a link at the bottom of the page: How'd they do that. Click that link to see the form and codes that the page's author used to create the page you see. | Pagetoaster 2Pagetoaster 2 addresses limitations mentioned by advanced users of Pagetoaster. It permits use of a variety of page layouts, rather than the single fixed layout of Pagetoaster, and it uses HTML as its feature coding, rather than the idiosyncratic ampersand codes of Pagetoaster. As a result, page content can be authored in MS Word, Saved As HTML, and then copied and pasted into Pagetoaster 2. The pages of the Inside FDU newsletter and the motorcycle education page are examples of Pagetoaster 2 pages. Individuals are added to the Pagetoaster 2 authors list on request: contact webmaster@fdu.edu. Pages created in Pagetoaster can be converted to Pagetoaster 2 on request. Schedule permitting, new Pagetoaster 2 layouts can be created by Director of Web Operations William Kennedy, the creator of Pagetoaster and Pagetoaster 2. |
| If department pages in the standard FDU format are the goal, they can be created by the FDU webmaster based on your word processor documents. |
FDU Webmaster can build a department's pages . . .. . . schedule permitting. Although FDU Web Operations does not create web pages for individuals, departments can request that the Webmaster create the department's visibility on the web. These pages will be in a standard FDU format. If the department wishes to innovate outside the standard design template, the department must build the pages (see below). Webmaster-built pages are likeliest to be created promptly if the content is provided in the form of word processing documents. Web Operations can also scan and include photos provided by the department. |
| If a department team will jointly maintain pages, they can share access to a department directory of web pages. |
A department can create its own pagesOn request, a department may have space set aside on alpha.fdu.edu under the department name, rather than an individual's name. These pages are still subject to the university's Acceptable Use Policy, and a member of the faculty or staff must be the "owner" of record for the pages. Several individuals, including authorized students, may have update access to the department's pages, using their own ids and passwords. The required level of authoring skill is at least as high as for building one's own pages: The pages will represent the department and should be to a high standard of professionalism.Note that department pages should not be redundant with informational pages already on the web, e.g. http://fduinfo.com/depts/bcbahs.php. If these centrally maintained pages need updating, please contact Web Operations. |
