Online Teaching Workshops

Fairleigh Dickinson University is offering a series of workshops beginning May 18 that will help faculty learn the basic skills necessary for teaching online, including understanding the regulations necessary to have courses compliant for students with disabilities. The workshops will take approximately 7 to 8 contact hours over three weeks, however, faculty with previous experience may be able to skip some workshops. 
 
Faculty participating in the workshops will be able to receive certificates of completion. To receive the certificate, faculty must complete:
  • All Basic Workshops (allowing for possible reduction of requirements for experienced faculty)
  • At least one of the Special Topics on Assessment
  • At least one of the Special Topics on Accessibility

Basic Workshops – for certificate must take all of the below (or get credit for prior online teaching)

  • Creating and Using Assignments in Blackboard (Prerequisite: Assessment Basics)

Accessibility Special Topics – for certificate must take one (or get credit for prior online teaching)

Basics of Online Teaching

This workshop will introduce the key differences between online and face to face teaching, and introduce several laws that govern online learning. Participants will add basic required materials to a Blackboard “development shell,” using a pattern provided by OERA. This workshop must be taken before any of the other workshops.

Basics of Online Course Structure

This workshop introduces the difference between goals, outcomes and objectives, and explains why a consistent course structure supports students with disabilities. Participants will identify goals and outcomes for the class, map out modules for their classes, create operational definitions and add unit objectives for one module in the Blackboard development shell.

Assessment Basics

In this workshop backward and intentional design are emphasized as you learn to evaluate whether your assessment methods are appropriate and in alignment with your modular-level objectives and course level learning outcomes. Participants will identify an assessment technique for one module that is in alignment with the module’s objectives.

Accessibility Basics

This workshop will discuss disabilities, the difference between accessibility and accommodations, the laws supporting accessibility and an overview concerning accessibility and documents, blackboard, video, images, and web pages. Participants will use the Blackboard Ally tool to evaluate overall accessibility of several document types in the Blackboard development shell.

This workshop will introduce the Blackboard discussion board and provide a more in-depth discussion of the Federal requirement that online classes include “regular and substantive interaction.” Participants will create one discussion board topic in Blackboard.

Basics – Identifying Content and Copyright

This workshop will discuss copyright law as it pertains to online classes, and will briefly discuss options such as Open Educational Resources. Participants will find and evaluate the terms of use of one piece of content, and apply a fair-use analysis.

Special Topics (Accessibility) – Creating Accessible Word Documents

This workshop will explain the difference between short alt-tags, long alt-tags, null-tags, audio voice-over, and how to configure each of these to best meet the educational needs of your class. Participants will tag images in Word and in the Blackboard editor.
