Foundations in Academic Research (FAR)

International students who have an overall IELTS score of 6.5 (no band lower than 6.0), who wish to upgrade their academic English abilities, but would also like to take Master of Administrative Science coursework at the same time, may enroll in the Master Foundations in Academic Research (FAR) program at FDU.  This program provides students with the foundational skills necessary to develop the research, academic writing, and oral communication competencies appropriate to a master’s level program, including effective research strategies, writing reports, and literature reviews at a master’s level, delivering effective research presentations and negotiating the expectations and cultural norms in North American university and workplace settings.  

The Foundations in Academic Research program is a full semester of coursework that includes two MAS academic courses: Financial Administration and Theory and Practice of Administration. At the end of the program, students will have earned six academic credits towards the completion of their MAS degree program.

EPS 5299 Academic Research Foundations

3 hours per week

EPS 5299 is non-credit course designed to help students review, improve and develop the English and academic skills necessary for graduate level studies. Students focus on upgrading a variety of English language skills particularly related to writing, reading, and thinking critically, and presenting academic topics at a graduates level. Students learn the skills necessary for academic research including gathering information from primary and secondary sources, articulating reasoned conclusions and properly documenting sources.

MADS 6600 Theory and Practice of Administration

3 Credit

Introduction to issues of administration of public, private and not-for-profit organizations. Cases are used to analyze the relation of theory to practice and to illustrate the direct practical relevance of theoretical models to administrative action.

MADS 6601 Financial Administration

3 Credit

Analysis of the concepts and principles used in the financial administration of the public, private, and not-for-profit sectors. This includes the key elements of accounting, budgeting, planning and control, auditing, and their integration into a comprehensive administrative control system, including issues of systems design and implementation.
