The sciences and mathematics have been an integral part of the liberal arts tradition for well over two thousand years. The primary missions of the School of the Sciences, Mathematics, and Computer Science (SMCS) are to provide the science and math component of the liberal arts education for all students as well as the professional training for its majors.

The School of SMCS of Fairleigh Dickinson University is committed to providing students with a solid foundation in both the theoretical concepts and practical applications of science and mathematics. School of SMCS graduates will be well prepared to further their education in graduate or professional schools or to pursue a variety of careers in mathematics, computer science, biological, chemical, pharmaceutical, environmental, or marine sciences.

The development of scientific literacy for all graduates is the most important component of our mission for non-science majors. Science, math, and computer science instruction is provided with direct experience in mathematical and scientific practices and methods with the objective of ensuring that every graduate of Fairleigh Dickinson University has an understanding of the content and methods of science and math.
