Social Sciences and History
Our award-winning teachers work closely with students in and out of the classroom to help them thrive academically, grow as leaders and individuals, and prepare for the professional and civic challenges of our new millennium. Our program offers both broad training in the fields of history, geography, politics, and sociology, while also encouraging individualized study, projects, and work experiences like externships and internships.
Several of our faculty also take students on trips as part of classes and major programs, including Washington D.C., Montreal, France, Germany, China, and Japan. As teachers, we value our small class sizes and working with students one-on-one on thesis projects and research. We’re always looking for bright students who want to work hard and have fun
BA in Social Sciences
- The BASS and its core concentrations are job-oriented: Our classwork and programs prepare students for careers in law, public policy, teaching, social service, business, government work, environmental studies, and related fields. Every student in the major is assigned a faculty member, a career specialist, and a working professional — your PACT (Professional and Academic Career Transition) in your sophomore year.
- The BASS and its core concentrations develop flexible skills for today’s economy and society: Our students analyze complex data, read and interpret polls, add value to meetings, and present to large and small groups.
- The BASS and its core concentrations develop public leaders: Our program is unavoidably and unapologetically social. We teach our students to recognize and resolve local problems and how these challenges are embedded in larger national, international, and historical issues. No other degree at FDU offers more insight into the area’s public and private policies, and no other degree does a better job highlighting the way global events impact us. Our students start businesses, run for office, and find solutions to problems in their communities and workplaces.
