Beyond the [Greek] Letters
By Mary Ann Bautista
June 3, 2026 — Greek life at FDU has never been more active, accomplished and philanthropic. This academic year is clear proof that both fraternities and sororities remain committed to leadership, service and community engagement.
At the Florham Campus, sororities and fraternities raised more than $100,000 through philanthropic activities, ranging from bake sales and “Phamily Pheud” events to Zeta Beta Tau’s biannual Air Band, a traditional lip sync performance event. Beneficiaries of more than 100 fundraising events include: Military Heroes Campaign, Huntsman Cancer Institute, St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, Gift of Life, Jewish Women International, Cystic Fibrosis Foundation, the National Association of Anorexia Nervosa and Associated Disorders, Camp Friendship and Think Pink Breast Cancer Education and Awareness.

They also brought bagels for the firefighters on duty that morning. Sigma Pi raised $4,000 worth of toys for The Valerie Fund, a nonprofit providing individualized care to children with cancer and blood disorders.
According to MacKenzie Garrity, coordinator for Greeks and student life programming (Flor), Phi Sigma Sigma partnered with Orange (N.J.) High School and donated more than $3,000 worth of hygiene products and college essentials for high-school seniors heading to college this fall. Meanwhile, Theta Phi Alpha worked with nourish.NJ and Homeless Solutions in Morristown, N.J., to make snack packs and meal bags for people in the community. “I received an email from the OHS principal sharing how appreciative they were of our students’ donation,” she adds.
There has also been an increase in student involvement and participation, with the Florham Campus experiencing a 22-percent growth since August 2025: with 24 new fraternity members and 39 new sorority members.

At the Metropolitan Campus, Greek organizations helped raise funds through events such as Greek Showcase, a performance-based event where members displayed their various talents.

The Metropolitan Campus may have a smaller Greek community, but plans are underway to expand its presence. “My goal is to introduce new organizations to campus and continue creating meaningful programming and collaborations with the Office of Student Life and other departments,” says Antoinette Arce, coordinator for campus engagement and special projects (Metro). “These efforts will help recruit students seeking connection, leadership growth and lifelong brotherhood and sisterhood.”
Sigma Pi International Fraternity, Inc. at the Metropolitan Campus was recognized as the Organization of the Year for hosting creative and successful events and for its involvement in the campus community. The Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority Inc. event, Pink ’N Cozy, won Event of the Year for creativity and campus impact. The group also received Outstanding Greek Social Event Award for its “Pearls and Pour Tea” social event, Outstanding Greek Chapter Award and Sorority with the Highest GPA Award.
Being involved in Greek life is transformational not only to the people and organizations they support but also to members as well. For Nicholas Biondo, BS’26 (Flor), graduate assistant for Greek life and former Greek Senate president at the Florham Campus, being part of a fraternity taught him to be accountable, respectful and to be a better version of himself. “Joining Greek Life is a great way to get yourself involved in philanthropic efforts and leadership opportunities as well as build lifelong connections,” he adds. In his new role as graduate assistant, Biondo looks forward to implementing a variety of plans for the upcoming academic year — from increasing campus-wide involvement and visibility to continuing to support philanthropy and c0mmunity-service efforts and expanding leadership opportunities for students.
