Update

Tiffany Keller Hansbrough, management (Flor), and Omer Topaloglu, marketing (Metro), received Bright Idea Awards from the New Jersey Collegiate Business Administration Association (NJCBAA) on November 18, 2022. The award celebrates exceptional business teaching and research. Of 144 publications submitted to the annual Publications of New Jersey Business Faculty, the manuscripts by Keller Hansbrough and Topaloglu were among the top 10. Keller Hansbrough’s paper, “Do You Remember? Rater Memory Systems and Leadership Measurement,” was published in The Leadership Quarterly in April 2021. Topaloglu’s paper titled “The Impact of Online Review Content and Linguistic Style Matching on New Product Sales: The Moderating Role of Review Helpfulness” was first published in 2019 in Decision Sciences: A Journal of The Decision Sciences Institute. William “Pat” Schuber, homeland security (Metro), facilitated a pilot leadership program which educated participants — members of the Hackensack (N.J.) Police Department — on the history of Hackensack and the significant historical events that took place in the area. As part of the program, attendees visited Hackensack landmarks such as The Green, which was used as a strategic point during the American Revolution, and New Bridge Landing, a battleground known as the “Bridge that Saved a Nation.”

Benjamin Rifkin, Russian and dean, Becton College (Flor/Metro), wrote an op-ed titled “Let’s Not Bring Back the F,” which was posted on insidehighered.com on January 18.

FDU Trustee Gregory Olsen, BS’66, BS’68, MS’68 (Metro), research scientist and entrepreneur, has been selected to the University of Virginia’s (UVA) newly launched University Fellows Program. Under the program, he will be hosted by UVA’s School of Engineering and Applied Science this spring. Olsen’s commitment to providing science and engineering learning opportunities and encouragement to students — particularly to women and minority youth — has been fundamental throughout his work. According to Jennifer West, UVA dean of engineering, “Greg’s deep connection with our students, faculty and school community over the years, through programs such as the Olsen Fellows, are evidence of his dedication to developing engineering leaders with a commitment to societal impact.” During the semester, University fellows will hold discussions with their students in their home schools as well as with larger community-wide events to share their experience and promote thoughtful discussion.

On January 24, Robert McGrath, psychology (Metro) and senior scientist, VIA Institute on Character, presented the findings of a report he cowrote on “Skills for life: A review of life skills and their measurability, malleability and meaningfulness” at a conference hosted by the Inter-American Development Bank at its headquarters in Washington, D.C. McGrath and coauthor Alejandro Adler, dean of student life and well-being, Upper Canada College, Toronto, Ontario, Canada, were commissioned by the bank to do the report. They discussed their findings in a panel along with the ministers for education for Barbados and Uruguay.

Several members of the University community — administrators, faculty and student veterans — attended and presented at the 15th Student Veterans of America Annual National Conference held in January in Lake Buena Vista, Fla. The FDU contingent, which included, Michael Avaltroni, interim FDU president; Patricia Lemmerman, assistant dean for student affairs/community engagement, pharmacy/health sciences (Flor); Chadwin Sandifer, executive associate dean, pharmacy/health sciences (Flor); Martha Papson Garcia, director of veterans services (Metro); and student veteran Zabrena Grisi, presented on “Supporting a Veteran-friendly University Through Partnerships with Health Sciences and Future Health.” Papson Garcia and Elliot Hoffman, film (Flor), led a session about “Student Veterans on Film: Transitions, the Making of a Documentary.” To view a preview of Hoffman’s documentary go to “Transitions.” In addition, Papson Garcia was also part of a panel discussion on “Chapter Adviser Best Practices.”

Robert Valenti, associate vice president for auxiliary services, facilities (Metro), announced that FDU was a runner-up in the 2022 Planners Choice Awards (Filming category). The awards are given to unique spaces that embody “Best Of” attributes in a variety of categories such as “Weddings,” “Earth-friendly Venue” and “Formal Affairs.”

LEAP Beyond Success: How Leaders Evolve, the latest book by FDU Trustee Micheline Nader, serial health care entrepreneur, best-selling author and CEO, Jesra Foundation, was published by Lioncrest Publishing on February 7. She is chair of the Silberman College Board of Advisers.

Master of Social Work (MSW) faculty members from the School of Pharmacy and Health Sciences (all Flor) presented at the Council on Social Work Education’s Annual Program Meeting in Anaheim, Calif., in November 2022. Justin Bucchio, social work and founding program director, MSW program (who prerecorded his presentation, which was aired at the meeting); Zakia Clay, social work and program director, MSW program; Andrea Cole, social work and director of field, MSW program; Elma Kaiser, social work; and Eunsun Kwon, social work, led a workshop on “Preparing Future Social Workers Through Asynchronous Online Education.”

Kara Alaimo, communication (Metro) wrote the following op-eds, which were posted on cnn.com: “M&M’s Super Bowl ad is one to watch,” on February 7, and  “Jacinda Ardern proved the power of female leadership,” on January 19.

Scott Behson, management (Metro), wrote “Making Performance Reviews Fairer in a Hybrid Workplace” for the Harvard Business Review. His article was then quoted in the Daily Briefing section of advisory.com.

David Rosen, anthropology (Flor), will present at a virtual conference on child soldiers hosted by the Washington and Lee University School of Law, Lexington, Va., on February 16. He will discuss “Child Soldiers and the Tragedy of War: Beyond Dystopian Models of Child Soldiering.”

Vicki Cohen, education and director, Academic Sustainability Initiatives (Metro), announced that the University will hold its first Sustainability Symposium on Wednesday, April 19, in Wilson Auditorium, Dickinson Hall, at the Metropolitan Campus, and streamed via Zoom. FDU joined the Association of Advancement of Sustainability in Higher Education (AASHE) and is working toward attaining recognition as a sustainability institution through AASHE’s STAR rating system. In addition, Cohen mentioned that several students were awarded stipends by the John Ben Snow Memorial Foundation for climate-change research and projects. Recipients and their faculty/staff mentors include Justyn Carollo and Maame Adwoa Asamoah Duodo (mentor Svetlana Bashkova, chemistry [Flor]); Jasalyn Hardy (mentor Marisela Rivera, assistant director for global engagement [Metro/Flor]); Elsayyid Nour, Weronika  Przedworska and Angie Reyes-Mendoza (mentor Neelu Sinha, computer science [Flor]); Jessica Ruggiero and Brede Gibson (mentor Elise Morton, biology [Flor]); and Nicole Tighe (mentor Ruth Hladyk, hotel/restaurant/tourism management [Flor]).

Linda Lee-Davies, international business/Core, is currently working on a chapter about United Nations Sustainable Development Goals with alumna Leanne Guarnieri, BS, MBA’22 (Flor), for the University textbook Sustainable Economics.

Peter Woolley, political science (Flor) and founding director, public/global affairs, gave a post-election analysis on December 6, 2022, at the Summit (N.J.) Free Public Library. His presentation focused on a variety of issues: why the 2022 midterm elections will rank among the most expensive in history, how pollsters fared and what the implications are for the current administration and its agenda as well as the next national election.

Craig Mourton, assistant vice president for student affairs (Metro), has been named as one of seven coleaders of the Diversity Equity and Inclusion (DE&I) Council, which includes business leaders from all backgrounds and industries who strategize successful DE&I practices at meetings and collaborate on major events. The DE&I Council is a member council of the New Jersey Business and Industry Association.

Chadwin Sandifer, executive associate dean, pharmacy/health sciences, and Dongmi Kim, pharmacy practice and director, interprofessional education (both Flor), will work with FDU’s New Jersey and Vancouver campuses to deliver Mental Health First Aid training to more than 150 faculty, staff and administrators in February and March. Mental Health First Aid will help people assist someone experiencing a mental health or substance use-related crisis. Topics covered include depression and mood disorders, anxiety disorders, trauma, psychosis and substance-use disorders.

Presenters in this spring’s LEAD NOW Leadership Workshops are Michael Avaltroni, interim president (“Leadership Vision”); Sarah Azavedo, assistant dean of students (Flor) (“How to Develop a Leadership Plan”); Rashard Mills, assistant director, Student Union Building operations, and Loren Darzano, assistant director of campus life for student engagement, campus life (both Metro) (“Discovering Leadership Super Powers: Maximizing and Balancing Your Team’s Impact”); Craig Mourton, assistant vice president for student affairs (Metro) (“Resilience”); Alyssa Paccione, psychological counselor, Wellness Center (Flor) (“Emotional Intelligence”); and Ryan Stalgaitis, director of career development (Flor) (“Beyond Interviewing, Now What?”).

David Nguyen, head women’s volleyball coach, athletics (Metro), was named Northeast Conference (NEC) Women’s Volleyball Coach of the Year, in his first year as head coach and his first season at FDU. He has led the Knights to the most NEC wins in FDU history and the most regular-season wins since 2008. Under Nguyen’s leadership, the Knights women’s volleyball team won the NEC Championship for the first time in history. “Reflections,” an exhibit of self-portraits by Marie Roberts, fine arts (Metro), and artist George Taylor, who is known for his 3D ceramics, was on display at the University Hall Art Gallery on the Metropolitan Campus through February 15. The exhibit gave a glimpse into their studio practice utilizing the genre of self-portraits. Roberts draws on toned paper with brown inks that reveal multiple colors, while Taylor paints on ceramic slabs, adjusting the colors through multiple glazings and firings.

Criminology and criminal justice faculty members Jordan Nowotny (Flor); Elizabeth Panuccio (Metro); and Amy Shlosberg, chair, criminology/criminal justice (Flor), presented on “Post-traumatic Growth Among Exonerees: Exploring Transformative Experiences After Exoneration” at the Innocence Project’s inaugural virtual conference on December 14.

Karl France, head men’s volleyball coach, athletics (Metro), announced that the team made a donation to Holy Name Medical Center, Teaneck, N.J. The money was raised by the team during their “No Shave November” campaign in support of Sina Sabari, an FDU recruit who was set to join the team in 2022 before a rare cancer diagnosis. Holy Name was chosen as the recipient after Ethan Young, a member of the team, came across Cancer Support Community, which is run by the hospital.

Works by Julia Wagner, academic writing and director, Metro Writing Studio (Metro), and Sunhee Yoon, Becton College (Metro), will be among those on display in the group show, “Invisible Room.” The exhibit will run from Monday, February 20, through Saturday, March 4, at the University Hall Art Gallery on the Metropolitan Campus. On Thursday, March 2, from 1:30 to 2:30 p.m., the artists will talk about their work, ideas and artistic approaches. The exhibit initially ran from January 17 to February 11 at the Artcom Center Gallery in Tenafly, N.J.

Rebecca Chace, creative writing and director, MA in creative writing and literature for educators (Flor), wrote the essay, “Diary: Rebecca Chace, A House Made of Books,” which was posted on substack.com on October 30, 2022. She also wrote an obituary for award-winning novelist Russell Banks, which was published in The New York Times in January.

Afsaneh Javadi, computer security/digital forensics (Van), and alumnus Foad Davini, BA’13, MAS’14 (Van), a senior operations and technology leader, hosted a career talk for Persian students at the Vancouver Campus.

Books by Florham Campus creative writing faculty members — Caprice by Coe Booth and The Science of Being Angry by Nicole Melleby, MFA’16 (Flor), were named to the School of Library Journal’s Best Middle Grade Books 2022 List.

Knights athletics executive staff Bradford Hurlbut, athletics director; Cathy Liggett, deputy director of athletics/senior woman administrator; Jennifer Quirk, senior associate athletic director for compliance; and Jason Young, senior associate athletic director of external affairs (all Metro), attained Certified Inclusive Leader status from the DEI firm Return on Inclusion (ROI). FDU is the first institution in the nine-member Northeast Conference to partner with ROI. The University began the Inclusive Leader Program in December 2021 with administrators, coaches and staff participating in the online coursework and video conferencing workshops and conversations. Eliot Schrefer, creative writing (Flor), received a Printz Honor Book Award for his book Queer Ducks (and Other Animals): The Natural World of Animal Sexuality. The award honors books that exemplify literary excellence in young adult literature.

Alan Goldberger, Petrocelli Center (Metro), was a featured guest on the December 15, 2022 episode of the Best’s Insurance Law Podcast, which covered the topic “What Insurers Should Know About Potential Claims Based on Hair Discrimination.”

Edward Mendlowitz, Silberman College (Flor), wrote the article “Art of Accounting: How to manage an accounting graduate seminar,” which was published on Accounting Today in January.

Jeff Slanovec, head men’s basketball coach, athletics (Flor), announced that the men’s basketball team participated in Suits and Sneakers Week (January 23 to 28), which is part of the Coaches vs. Cancer program. The program is a nationwide collaboration between the American Cancer Society and the National Association of Basketball Coaches. “Suits and Sneakers Week is always one of my favorite weeks of the year, as we get to use our small platform to help bring awareness and raise funds in the fight against cancer,” said Slanovec. “Putting the sneakers on instead of dress shoes makes it easy to think of people that I know who have been affected by this terrible disease.”

Eric Goldman, program director, Yeshiva and Seminary program (Metro), along with students Steven Meisels and Daniel Aaron, traveled to Israel in December to attend the TAU Finance Conference hosted by the Coller School of Management at Tel Aviv University. The conference was an opportunity for participants to learn from finance educators from all over the world, with an emphasis on finance in Israel. On February 20, Christine Foster, communication (Flor), will moderate a virtual discussion on “Journalism in the Digital Age” featuring United Nations correspondents Kaori Yoshida (Nikkei), Benno Schwinghammer (German Press Agency) and Stephanie Fillion (Asahi Shimbun). It will be hosted by the Office of International Education.

Kathleen Stein-Smith, languages (Metro), was named an Officier dans l’Ordre des Palmes académiques (“Order of Academic Palms”), a national order bestowed by the French Republic on distinguished academics and teachers and for valuable service to universities, education and science. In addition, she was elected to the executive board of the American Society of the French Academic Palms for a three-year term beginning in July 2023. Two of her articles have also been published: “Bilingualism as a Means Towards Greater Inclusion: New Perspectives from Within International Education,” in the Global Studies Literature Review, a peer-reviewed publication of thought leadership, and “Language Advocacy — Strongly Rooted in Values and Growing in Impact,” in the Language Association Journal, a publication of the New York State Association of Foreign Language Teachers.

The Role of Technology in Community Mental Health: A Strengths-based Approach,” an article by Zakia Clay, social work and program director, MSW program (Flor), was featured in Social Work in the Age of Disconnection: Narrative Case Studies, which was published in 2022 by Routledge, an imprint of Taylor & Francis Group.

Sierra Slack has been named interim head coach of women’s lacrosse at the Florham Campus for the 2023 season. Knights head coaches Chris Foye, softball, and Manny Roman, baseball (both Metro), were featured in the February nj.com article “Risking their lives off the field: Meet N.J.’s bravest college coaches.” Foye is a full-time firefighter with the South Essex Fire Department in Maplewood, N.J., while Roman is a volunteer firefighter with the Red Bank (N.J.) In Memoriam

Rev. John “Jack” Baron, Becton College (Metro), died on December 28, 2022, at the age of 75. He joined FDU in 1998 as an adjunct faculty member. Known to generations of FDU students as Father Jack, he was the University’s director of campus ministries and senior lecturer of philosophy and religious studies until 2016. He continued to teach at FDU on an adjunct basis in 2017. He is survived by his sister, Patricia Nebel and her husband, Howard; her brother, Albert Baron, Jr., and his wife, Janet; seven nieces and nephews; and 14 grand nieces and nephews. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Fairleigh Dickinson University (indicate “Baron Scholarship” in Memo Section of check) and mailed to University Advancement Office, Fairleigh Dickinson University, 1000 River Road, Teaneck, NJ 07666 (Attention: Delia Perez).

Paul Lenz, retired biological sciences (Flor), died on November 30, 2022, at the age of 84. He joined FDU in 1966 as assistant professor biology. A beloved professor and mentor to students at the Florham Campus, he retired in 1993 as professor of biological sciences. He is survived by his children, Paul David Lenz, Joy Kevanian, Christopher Lenz, Karen Giralt and Dawn.

Lillian Lukac, retired public relations assistant, communications (Flor), died on January 20 at the age of 86. She joined FDU in 1983, initially working at the library on the Florham Campus before joining the public relations office as a public relations assistant. She retired in 2011. She is survived by her son David, and his wife Diana; her daughter, Lori Slinski, and her husband, John; granddaughters Sophia, Elena and Kayleigh; and other relatives and friends. In lieu of flowers, donations to a favorite charity under Lillian’s name would be appreciated.

Marilyn McPartland, retired assistant to the dean, Petrocelli College (Metro), died on February 7 at the age of 77. She joined FDU in 1987 as assistant to the dean of Petrocelli College and retired in 2013. She is survived by her husband, Frank; sons, William and Robert; brother, Anthony Alaimo; and nieces and nephews. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in her memory to the American Cancer Society, PO Box 6704, Hagerstown, Md.
