On Saturday, January 27, 2024 the University and the Division III Devils athletics program will dedicate the newly refinished basketball court to longtime head men’s basketball coach and head men’s golf coach Roger Kindel.

Kindel passed away in March of 2020, and was a huge part of the Florham Campus and the success that the Devils saw during his time as a coach and administrator.

“Roger was a great coach, mentor and friend to so many. On behalf of FDU Devils Athletics, we are proud to dedicate this court to a man who loved this place so much. May his spirit and legacy carry on this hardwood, forever,” said Athletic Director and Head Women’s Soccer Coach Kristin Giotta.

He was a member of the FDU community for more than 40 years. He served as the head men’s basketball coach from 1978–2005. During that time, Kindel won 334 games, reached the NCAA Tournament in 1990 and 1998; competed in the Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) tournament seven times, including winning the ECAC championship in 1999; and made the Middle Atlantic Conference Freedom Tournament nine times. Kindel also served as the head men’s golf coach from 1990–2018, guiding the Devils to four consecutive Freedom Conference Tournament Championships from 2006–2009 and one in 2013. Under his leadership, the Devils went to the NCAA Tournament in 2007, 2008, 2009 and 2013. Kindel also earned Freedom Conference Coach of the Year honors five times and tutored five Freedom Conference Players of the Year.

“Roger was an icon for 41 years at FDU, whether you were a student-athlete or not, everyone knew of ‘Coach Kindel’”, said former Director of Athletics Jenn Noon. “Roger was one of the most impactful human beings that had a significant influence on the entire FDU community, and it is only fitting to have his name permanently displayed when you walk into the gymnasium.”
