FDU Gains Global Recognition as Age-Friendly University

February 9, 2026 — Fairleigh Dickinson University has been recognized as an Age-Friendly University (AFU) by the Age-Friendly University Global Network — an international consortium of higher education institutions committed to creating inclusive and supportive environments across the lifespan. FDU is only the second New Jersey university to earn this designation.
“This is a very rewarding distinction and an important validation of our longstanding efforts to support lifelong learning and provide a welcoming environment for people of all ages,” said FDU President Michael Avaltroni. “It’s especially meaningful as we begin to reimagine our campuses to focus particularly on health and wellness initiatives across our community and as we aspire to create more opportunities for intergenerational living and learning.”
“This recognition reflects your university’s dedication to creating age-friendly environments, expanding educational access, and fostering intergenerational connections that enrich campus life and the broader community,” said M. Aaron Guest, Chair of the Secretariat of the Age-Friendly University Global Network. “We are thrilled to welcome your institution’s perspectives, expertise, and enthusiasm to our global network.”
Hosted by Arizona State University, the network of more than 140 institutions across five continents promotes healthy, active aging through education, research, and community engagement, and encourages universities to emphasize 10 principles that make learning accessible to all ages and foster intergenerational collaboration.
“Our participation in the network provides a guiding framework, access to best practices and potential collaborations for us to enhance our efforts and expand programs and opportunities to support older learners, intergenerational experiences and community engagement,” Avaltroni added.
