EPS Placement and Test
International Students
While students may have achieved the TOEFL and/or other English Proficiency scores required for admission, further development in English proficiency may be necessary to support academic achievement and to ensure effective progress in the student’s chosen academic program.
All new international undergraduate and graduate students, except for those who are exempted, are tested for English proficiency before or when they arrive for International Student Orientation. New international students may not assume that they are exempt from this English test even though they have had many years of English education in their home countries or abroad.
Depending on test results, new international undergraduate and graduate students on both the New Jersey campuses may be placed into the English for Professional Success (EPS) course.
Undergraduate students who are placed into an EPS course must take the class and co-requisite lab and will be charged tuition upon registration. Graduate students who are placed into an EPS course are required to take the class and co-requisite lab and will be charged a nominal fee. PEAPS also offers electives:
- EPS 1201/EPS 5201: EPS: Global Exchange–New York City as a Classroom (language and culture/elective course)
- EPS 1209: Advanced English for Occupational Purposes (for UG students only, offered only at Metropolitan Campus)
- EPS 1219: Advanced English for Academic Purposes (for UG students only, offered only at the Metropolitan Campus)
- EPS 2202: NYC: One City, Many Cultures (language and culture/elective course)
- EPS 5209: Advanced English for Occupational Purposes (for GR students only, offered only at Metropolitan Campus)

Hispanic Center and Center for Student Success Students
All students in the AVANZA, HACER, and PAF programs must take the EPS placement exam in person or online before the start of the semester. The EPS placement exam will determine the EPS class level they are placed in. Students in the AVANZA, HACER, and PAF programs are not charged tuition for the EPS courses as long as they are taking one academic course towards their degree.
