American Culture and English

Fairleigh Dickinson University’s American Culture and English Language (ACE) Semester provides visiting international undergraduate students with highly specialized English language courses focused while also earning credit toward their degree. FDU offers this exciting opportunity exclusively to students studying at one of our approved international partners. FDU’s ACE Semester is available on FDU’s Metropolitan Campus in Teaneck, NJ, located just 16 km from New York City, which is easily accessible by mass transportation.

ACE Semester Features and Advantages

FDU’s American Culture and English (ACE) Semester helps international students overcome many of the obstacles they face studying abroad in the USA by providing an innovative curriculum integrating specialized English language preparation with advanced learning strategies and critical thinking skills and regular courses in their academic major or other area of interest. This innovative structure allows ACE Semester students to maximize the academic and professional impact of their study abroad experience

  • The ACE Semester is offered to students who have already achieved an intermediate level of English proficiency but need additional support in order to successfully study abroad in the USA.
  • ACE Semester English language classes address the most common causes of difficulty: meeting expectations for reading and writing at a university level and participating in classroom discussions.
  • In addition to academic English skills, the program introduces students to advanced learning strategies to ensure success in university-level courses taught in English.
  • The curriculum includes English for Professional Success (EPS) courses cover professional communication topics and skills relevant to students entering the workforce.
  • The University’s learning resources and support centers provide additional support in language and academic content tutoring.
  • Small classes ensure personalized attention from instructors.
  • While improving their academic English language skills, students can earn up to 18 credits toward their bachelor’s degree program (depending on their home university’s transfer credit policies)
  • Students can begin the program in the fall (August) or spring (January) semesters.

Applying to the ACE Semester

To be considered for admission to the ACE Semester you should first contact the Office of Study Abroad at your home university to discuss whether the program is appropriate for you. Your study abroad office should notify FDU at global@fdu.edu of your intent to apply. To be accepted for the ACE Semester, students must demonstrate an intermediate level of English proficiency by submitting one of the following:

  • TOEFL iBT Score from 50 to 69
  • IELTS overall band score of 5.0
  • GTEC score of 1000
  • ITEP score of 3.2
  • An ELS Language Center Certificate of Completion of Level 110 of the English for Academic Purposes (EAP) program

Note: ACL Semester students must take a minimum of twelve credits (including eight credits of EPS courses) and may take a maximum of eighteen credits.

Tuition and Fees

Effective 2019-20, $15,614 per semester inclusive of tuition, room and board (additional costs — mandatory medical insurance, optional New York City Excursion Fee, a study permit or visa, graduation fee, round-trip airfare, books, personal expenses, etc. — are not included)
