Public Safety Supervisors

Joseph Vitiello, University Director 

Joseph Vitiello has served as Director of Public Safety since March 12, 2018. Joseph joined Fairleigh Dickinson University Department of Public Safety as Assistant Director in September 2012, following a 26-year career in law enforcement. Joseph was a lieutenant in the Ocean County Prosecutor’s Office where he served as Deputy Commander of the Special Operations Unit, oversaw the Special Victims Unit, Megan’s Law Unit and Domestic Violence Unit and acted as incident commander for many special assignments. Before that, Joseph was a detective in the Major Crimes and Special Enforcement Units of the Morris County Prosecutor’s Office, a Township of Irvington police officer and an Essex County probation officer. 

Joseph graduated with distinction from the Essex County Policy Academy and holds a B.A. in Political Science from William Paterson University. In addition, he has completed numerous certification and training programs over the course of his career (including a Specialized School in Supervision and Police Management sponsored by the Federal Bureau of Investigation and courses offered by the New York City Police Department, the National Intelligence Academy and the United States Department of Justice). 

Since joining Fairleigh Dickinson, Joseph demonstrates professionalism, leadership and appreciation for campus policing that ideally suit his new responsibilities. His visions for campus safety, student education, community policing and regional cooperation are sure to contribute to the safety and security of the University.
