In Memoriam

Edward L. Hennessy, Jr., BS’55 (Ruth), former Board of Trustees chair and retired chairman and CEO of the aerospace, automotive and engineering giant AlliedSignal, passed away on May 8, at the age of 98.
During his 20-year tenure, Hennessy presided over AlliedSignal through a series of major acquisitions and mergers leading it to become one of the nation’s prominent technology firms.
He joined the FDU Board of Trustees in 1978 and served for 16 years, including 11 as chairman. He was a generous benefactor, chairing the University’s first comprehensive capital campaign, Partners in Education, and later the Challenge 90s Campaign. He and his wife, Ruth, also established the Edward L. Hennessy, Jr. and Ruth S. Hennessy Foundation Scholarship Fund at FDU.
In recognition of his continued philanthropy and support of the University, the iconic Vanderbilt-Twombly mansion at the Florham Campus bears his name. The building was dedicated as Hennessy Hall in May 2007. His support also made possible the Elizabeth Ruth Hennessy Athletic Field, named for his daughter, in 2021.
In 1984, he received an honorary doctor of laws degree from FDU, and in 1989 he was honored as a member of the PINNACLE’s inaugural class of alumni. The following year he was awarded the inaugural Charter Day award for his dedication as a trustee and chairman of the board.
He is predeceased by his wife of 65 years, Ruth. He is survived by his daughter, Elizabeth; a son, Michael; two grandchildren and several nieces, nephews, grand-nieces and grand-nephews as well as great grand-nieces and nephews.
Richard J. Codey, BA’81 (Flor), a former New Jersey governor and legislator, died on January 11, at age 79.
He was the longest-serving state legislator in New Jersey’s history; he was president and co-president of the New Jersey Senate and was the 53rd governor from 2004–06. He retired from the New Jersey Senate in 2024.
At FDU, he created the Governor Richard J. Codey Scholarship to support students focused on mental health education. This advocacy extended into his public service, as he sponsored legislation to cut healthcare costs and protect quality of care. In 2017, he presented FDU with a “stigma-free” designation at the Florham Campus, launching discussions and providing support.
From FDU, Codey received a Lifetime Achievement award in 2024, a PINNACLE Award in 2011 and an honorary Doctorate of Humane Letters in 2005. He was inducted into the DIII Devils Hall of Fame as a contributor and has a classroom dedicated to him in Hennessy Hall.

From left are Jill Kushner; Walter Cummins, professor emeritus of English; and the late Harry Keyishian. All three were editorial staff of The Literary Review, circa the 1980s.
Harry Keyishian, professor emeritus of English at FDU, died on April 4 at age 93.
A renowned Shakespeare scholar, Keyishian was lead plaintiff in Keyishian v. Board of Regents, the landmark legal case that ended the requirement of loyalty oaths in academia.
In 1964, Keyishian was fired by the State University of New York for refusing to sign a loyalty oath administered under the state’s Feinberg Law, mandating that employees swear they were not Communists or other political subversives.
He and other fired faculty sued the New York State Board of Regents. The case went all the way to the United States Supreme Court. In 1967, the court ruled in Keyishian v. Board of Regents that the First Amendment held freedom of thought in the university as a “special concern” that needed protection. The decision is considered a landmark defense of academic freedom.
In 1965, FDU hired Keyishian. He taught for 45 years and was the first to win FDU’s Distinguished Faculty Award for Research.
His books include Michael Arlen (1976); Collected Essays on William Saroyan (1996); The Shapes of Revenge: Victimization, Vindictiveness, and Vengeance in Shakespeare (1996); and Screening Politics (2003). He was director of the Fairleigh Dickinson University Press and co-edited The Literary Review. He published extensively in scholarly journals and magazines and organized annual Shakespeare colloquia on campus. Of Armenian descent, he also served on the editorial board and wrote for Ararat, a journal published by the Armenian General Benevolent Union.
He was predeceased by his wife, Marjorie Deiter Keyishian, a poet, fiction writer and journalist who taught at FDU. They are survived by four daughters: Sarah Keyishian, Elizabeth Keyishian Wilks, Amy Keyishian and Emily Keyishian, and seven grandchildren: Noah, Gabriella, Sophie, Harry, Jake, Shane and Abby.
