Why They Chose FDU: Transfer Students Share Their Stories

Students taking notes

For National Transfer Student Week, October 19-23, we’re celebrating the students who found their next chapter at FDU. Eight students share what brought them to FDU and what they would tell others considering the move.

Nyeeam Hudson, a freshman psychology major at Florham, transferred from Chestnut Hill College. “The admissions team and the coaching staff here are incredibly involved and interested in me as a person, not only as a student or an athlete,” he said. His advice: “Don’t second-guess your decision.”

Justin McCarthy, a junior computer science major at Florham, came from County College of Morris. FDU was close to home, affordable and offered the majors and courses he wanted. His advice: weigh cost, proximity, campus living and the programs that excite you.

Jenna Curtin, a sophomore forensic psychology major on the Metropolitan Campus, transferred from St. John’s University. “I’ve heard many great things about FDU, and I wanted to be a part of it,” she said. Her advice: “Give everything a chance, because that’ll only make it easier.”

Christian Morales, a sophomore health studies major on the Metropolitan Campus, transferred from Bergen Community College and is on the path to becoming a registered nurse. “Transferring to a new school can be a fresh start and another opportunity to get closer to the future you want for yourself,” he said. His advice: “Never give up on the goals you have worked so hard to achieve.”

William Blum, a sophomore hospitality and tourism management major at Florham, transferred from Beacon College, drawn by the opportunities that come with being close to New York City, Philadelphia and Washington, D.C. His advice: “Meet with as many departments as you can.” And be patient with yourself: “You will find your role here. It takes time.”

Inva Furriku, a senior finance major at Florham, transferred from Widener University for the Silberman College of Business and its AACSB accreditation, then visited campus to see it for herself. She calls transferring “one of the best decisions I’ve made.” Her advice: “Give yourself permission to be new again. Join a club, talk to your professors, and introduce yourself to the people sitting next to you in class.”

Esau Razac, a sophomore mechanical engineering major on the Metropolitan Campus, transferred from County College of Morris. He saw FDU as a challenge worth accepting, made possible by the scholarship he received. His advice: “Be respectful. Study hard. And have patience.”

Evelina Zhuk, a sophomore studying psychology and business administration on the Metropolitan Campus, transferred from Idaho State University. She wanted to keep playing Division I tennis while exploring new academic interests. Her advice: “Do as much research as possible before making the move,” and “give yourself time to adjust.”
