Following several weeks of laboratory learning that takes place on the FDU campus, this program will have 4 clinical rotation options:
- Rotation I: pend
- Rotation II: pend
- Rotation III: pend
- Rotation IV: pend
Phlebotomists are essential members of the healthcare team whose roles are critical in the pre-analytical phase of specimen collection process. Their role is key and the first step in the process to producing quality clinical laboratory patient test results.
The Phlebotomy Technician Certificate Program at CONAH is an educational curriculum structured in accordance with the American Society for Clinical Pathology (ASCP). The program lectures include 40 – 50 hours of didactic material delivered in an asynchronous learning mode. There may be some additional synchronous class meetings by Zoom. The student labs will be on Saturdays only and in person on the Metro campus at the CONAH student laboratory. In addition, students will participate in a clinical rotation at an approved clinical site (i.e., accredited or have a certificate of compliance by the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid and/or Clinical Laboratory Improvement Amendment) to obtain a minimum of 100 unaided venipuncture procedures and capillary punctures, with a minimum of 100 clinical hours. Once rotations are completed, CONAH awards the student with a college-level Certificate of Program Completion in Phlebotomy.
Upon completion of this program, students are qualified to seek a Phlebotomist Technician career in any inpatient or outpatient setting and are eligible to sit for the ASCP – Phlebotomy Technician (PBT) Certification Exam, which is a board certification that is highly recommended and preferred by many employers. The professional credential earned will be awarded as PBT(ASCP) on the Certificate awarded to the recipient by ASCP.
Evidence of course/CE completion: Participants who successfully complete the course will receive an electronic certificate of completion upon completion of the course. In addition, the course will be listed on the FDU transcript for course completers.
For more information about the Phlebotomy Certification exam, please see Get Credentialed. Please review the Program Eligibility (Route 2) Documentation Form.
The CONAH Phlebotomy Technician Certificate Program is divided into TWO PARTS:
Part A: Didactic and Student Lab – Students will attend approximately 45-50 hours of lecture and student lab. Lectures will be primarily offered via Zoom, and student lab will be in person at the Metro campus. All students enrolled in this program must be present in student lab. Classes will be held on SATURDAYS from 9:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. via Zoom. Student Lab starts in April and will be held ON CAMPUS on Saturdays from 9:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m.
Part B: Clinical Rotation – To attend clinical rotations (Part B), students must pass part A of the program with a minimum grade of C-. Each student will be placed at an affiliated clinical site to perform a minimum of 100 successful and unaided venipunctures and capillary punctures over a span of 100 hours at the clinical site.
Students are placed during one of the following rotation blocks. Each block is 100 hours or about 12-13 business days. Rotation dates may vary depending on clinical site availability, and the clinical schedule is always subject to change. Students must attend clinical rotations during the week (Monday-Friday). Weekend rotations are not offered during this program.
Program Cost
The total cost for the Phlebotomy Program is approximately $2500. Program tuition of $2,000 must be paid upon registration. This payment is non-refundable. If a student enrolls and then cannot attend, this fee will be applied to a subsequent offering of the program.
Breakdown of Additional Program Fees
Students are responsible for costs associated with obtaining a physical exam and personal health insurance, both required for clinical clearance. Once placed at a clinical site, students are also responsible for their own transportation and parking costs. Students are responsible for additional program fees as outlined here:
- DISA Healthcare (see below), $175
- Trajecsys (document tracker online system), $75
- Phlebotomy Essentials (textbook & workbook), $250
- FDU Technology Fee, $15
DISA Healthcare Clinical Clearance
DISA Healthcare Technology (formerly “CastleBranch”) medical document manager/compliance tracker is used to collect and store clinical compliance documentation for students who will be entering a patient care location (e.g., hospital, clinic) as part of their educational program. FDU gives clinical site personnel access to view DISA Healthcare documents so that they can be assured that a student can safely enter a patient care setting. Fees are paid directly by the student to DISA Healthcare For initial enrollment of Phlebotomy students, select CODE xxxx.
After registering for the Phlebotomy Technician Certificate Program, prospective students will receive a notification in their email account with instructions for the clearance process using DISA Healthcare. The clearance process can take up to one month, so it is suggested that students start the process as soon as they register for the program.
Through DISA Healthcare, students will order and/or upload:
- Documentation of physical exam performed by a licensed provider (e.g., APN/NP, MD, DO).
- Immunization and vaccination documentation.
- Background check.
- Urine drug test.
- Copy of high school diploma (or equivalent).
- Current health insurance card.
Students will be required to upload the following evidence to DISA Healthcare portal:
- Serologic immunity (i.e., titers) to Measles, Mumps, and Rubella. (If non-immune or equivocal status, the student must have 2 doses of the vaccine at least 30 days apart, and a repeat titer must be drawn 1-2 months after the second dose.)
- Serologic immunity (i.e., titers) to Varicella. (If non-immune or equivocal status, the student must have 2 doses of the vaccine given 4-8 weeks apart, and a repeat titer must be drawn 1-2 months after the second dose.)
- Adult Tdap vaccination within 10 years.
- Meningococcal vaccination within 5 years for residential students (or signed waiver if non-residential student).
- Serologic immunity (i.e., titers, including HBsAg, HBcIgMAb, HBsAb) to Hepatitis B Virus. (Enrollment of students who are potentially infectious for Hepatitis B Virus is contingent upon their ability to perform all essential functions required for program completion of the curriculum of the degree program with potentially clinical activities.)
- Annual Influenza vaccine. (If the vaccine is not received, the student will be required to sign a waiver and will be obligated to wear a mask while in the healthcare environment.)
- Annual Mantoux skin test or QuantiFERON-TB test for tuberculosis. (In a BCG-vaccinated person, QuantiFERON-TB is required.)
- Covid-19 vaccination (any year).
