Update
Anita Rivers, executive director of community relations, enrollment management (Metro), is one of the recipients of the 2021 Arline Simpson Leadership Award from the Meadowlands Chamber of Commerce. The award honors members and individuals who have been active and integral in advancing the Chamber’s mission and improving the greater community. The 2021 Arline Simpson Leadership Awards and Lunch for Love Benefit will be held on June 4 at the Meadowlands Racing and Entertainment in East Rutherford, N.J.
“Global Perspectives on Academic Integrity,” a chapter cowritten by Constance Bygrave, administrative science (Van), for the book Innovations in Higher Education Teaching and Learning: Strategies for Fostering Inclusive Classrooms in Higher Education, won in the Outstanding Author Contribution category of the 2020 Emerald Literati Awards for Excellence. The award is given to authors who have contributed something new or of significant value to the body of knowledge, either in terms of approach or subject matter.
Bradford Hurlbut, director of athletics (Metro), has announced the establishment of the Susan L. Capeci Women’s Golf Endowed Scholarship, which will be given annually to a student-athlete on the women’s golf team. The gift was established by alumnus John Capeci, BSEE’99 (Metro), in honor of his wife, who was a highly competitive and talented golfer for more than 40 years. Paulette Laubsch, public administration and academic coordinator, MPA program (Metro); William “Pat” Schuber, homeland security (Metro); and Peter Woolley, political science and founding director, public/global affairs (Flor), spoke at an advancing careers session hosted by the School of Public and Global Affairs. They were joined by Assemblywoman Shavonda Sumter, MBA’01 (Metro), and Councilman Kevin McMillan, former Neptune (N.J.) Township mayor, who shared their career tracks and discussed mentoring, education and training for careers in public and nonprofit service.
Staff members at the Monninger Center for Learning and Research at the Florham Campus participated at the Virtual Academic Library Environment (VALE) New Jersey Conference on January 6. Nicole Potdevin, associate University librarian and director of public services, presented two sessions: “Closed Doors, Open Library: Adapting an In-Person Library Scavenger Hunt to the Online Environment” and “Flip it and Reverse it: Moving In-Person Programming Online.” Robert Wolf, electronic resources librarian, and Saskia Kusnecov, research and metadata librarian, facilitated a roundtable discussion on “Open Educational Resources (OER) Initiatives at NJ Colleges and Universities Under the New Jersey Open Textbook Mandate.”
On March 23, Khyati Joshi, education (Metro) and cofounder of the Institute for Teaching Diversity and Social Justice (IDSJ), joined a Facebook live panel on “Learning and Teaching About Anti-Asian Hate Crimes: From Pre-K to Post-Doc,” which was hosted by the IDSJ. The panel provided the historical and current context surrounding anti-Asian racism and how to teach and talk about related topics.
Jennifer Noon, director of athletics (Flor), announced the addition of track and field teams to the Devils lineup in the fall of 2022. The University recently completed construction on the brand-new Elizabeth Ruth Hennessy track and field complex located near the Madison Avenue entrance of the Florham Campus. Scott Behson, management (Metro), was part of a virtual roundtable for NJ Spotlight News about “Back to Work in NJ: How Employers are Transitioning to the Post-COVID Workplace.” More than 550 people virtually attended the discussion.
David Zatz, public/global affairs (Metro), is the author of Wagoneer, Gladiator, Comanche and Scrambler: An Illustrated History of Jeep’s Tough, Go-Anywhere Wagons and Pickups, which was published in December 2020 by Enthusiast Books, Pepin, Wis.
Peter Burkholder, history (Flor), wrote a column titled “Lights, Camera … Survey! Americans Give History a Screen Test,” for the History News Network. He serves on the national advisory board of the Society for History Education, Inc. and is on the editorial board of The Teaching Professor.
A virtual United Nations/NGO forum on “Working In and Around the United Nations” was held on April 22. Among the panelists were Rogel Nuguid, director of strategic alliances/partnerships, Global CEO Alliance, and University core (Metro); Laurie Phipps, former principal policy adviser at United States Mission to United Nations, and University core (Metro). Ryan Stalgaitis, director of career development (Flor), moderated the discussion.
Michael LoPresti, head bowling coach, athletics (Metro), was named the 2020–21 Northeast Conference (NEC) Coach of the Year. To read more go to “Henderson, LoPresti Lead 2020–21 NEC Women’s Bowling Honors.” In addition, LoPresti was presented by Bradford Hurlbut, director of athletics (Metro), with a commemorative pin celebrating his 1,500th win — the winningest coach in NCAA women’s bowling history.
Edward Mendlowitz, Silberman College (Flor), wrote the article “Art of Accounting: How to prevent an embezzlement at a client,” which was posted on accountingtoday.com on April 19.
Christie Innes, assistant to director, public/global affairs (Metro), did a webinar on “New Directions of Public Services and Global Affairs” in February. It was hosted by Education USA-Ukraine and organized by American House Kyiv.
A Lunch and Learn Training Series, a series of interactive and personalized group training sessions for FDU faculty, staff and educators, was developed by Christopher Robley, director of systems, University systems/networking (Metro), and will be moderated by Coralia Palacios, BS’20 (Van), information technology assistant (Van). The first session on Microsoft Teams for Education was held on April 29.
Kathleen Stein-Smith, languages (Metro), presented on “The Importance of World Language Advocacy” at the Ohio Foreign Language Association 2021 online mini conference on April 24.

In Memoriam
Stephen Tumminello, BS’58 (Ruth), former chair, FDU Board of Trustees, died on April 12 at the age of 84. He led a successful career in lighting and electronics, during which he became the first American CEO of North American Philips Corporation. He also was actively involved in FDU’s projects — serving as chairman of the University’s Annual Fund drive and working on the task force that rebuilt the Alumni Association in the mid-1980s. He was a member of the Alumni Association Board of Governors as well as the Presidential Alumni Advisory Board and the President’s Council. In 1990, he was awarded The PINNACLE, the highest award the University bestows on its alumni. That same year, he was named to the board of trustees and in 1996 was appointed chairman of the board. In 2004, he received an Honorary Doctorate of Humane Letters from FDU. He is survived by his wife of 63 years, Elaine (Asher) Tumminello; three daughters and their spouses, Laurie Treene, Robyn and Kevin Nini and Wendy Tumminello and Laura Motley; brother, Charles Tumminello; sister, Joyce Balzoratti; and grandchildren, Lauren, Alayna, Julianna, Christina, Olivia, Hayden and Ethan. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Pancreatic Cancer Action Network.
