Prescribing Controlled Dangerous Substances (6-hour CDS Course)

Prescribing Controlled Dangerous Substances (6-hour CDS Course)

Practitioners who are eligible to write prescriptions for controlled substances will have to have DEA registration for each state in which they prescribe. In addition to DEA registration, some states (e.g., New Jersey) require an additional Controlled Substance registration (CSR). This online course meets the CSR mandate for a six-hour CDS course that must be completed to be licensed to prescribe and manage controlled drug substances in those states.

The course provides comprehensive coverage of both federal and state regulations governing controlled substance prescribing, including DEA requirements, pharmacologic properties of controlled substances, evidence-based prescribing practices, and strategies to address the opioid epidemic.

Participants will learn to:

  • Navigate federal DEA requirements and New Jersey state regulations
  • Understand drug scheduling and pharmacologic properties of commonly prescribed controlled substances
  • Implement best practices, including controlled substance agreements, naloxone co-prescribing, and urine drug testing
  • Screen for substance use disorders and appropriately refer patients for treatment
  • Apply evidence-based guidelines to prescribe controlled substances responsibly

Evidence of course/CE completion: Participants who successfully complete the course will receive an electronic certificate of completion. In addition, the course will be listed on the FDU CE transcript (which can be requested on the university transcript ordering page).
