Academic Profile

Dr. Vicki L. Cohen is Director of Sustainability at Fairleigh Dickinson University and Professor of Education. She received her Ed.D. from Teachers College, Columbia University in Communications, Computing and Technology in Education. She earned a master’s degree from Teachers College, Columbia University in Curriculum and Instruction and from University of Florida in Special Education. Dr. Cohen was Director of the School of Education from 2004 to 2022. She served as Interim Dean of University College from 2017-2020, overseeing 7 different professional Schools. As Interim Dean she assisted in the reorganization of Fairleigh Dickinson University. She has worked as a faculty member and administrator at Fairleigh Dickinson University since 1991. Dr. Cohen developed and implemented the Ed.D. in Higher Education in Fall 2020, and currently teaches Sustainable Development in Higher Education as well as other courses. She advises doctoral students and serves as Chair of Dissertation Committees.

Dr. Cohen taught for more than seven years in public schools as a learning disabilities teacher and taught courses in literacy instruction, technology implementation, problem-based learning, and assessment. She has published extensively in these areas and has presented at regional, national, and international conferences on her research. She is co-author of the literacy textbook, Literacy for Children in an Information Age; Teaching Reading, Writing and Thinking (XanEdu Publishing, 2017).

As Project Director on grants from the Alcoa Foundation and the Bayer Foundation, Dr. Cohen offered workshops to teachers on problem-based units focusing on sustainability, which were implemented in classrooms across New Jersey. She is currently project director of two grants that provide stipends to undergraduate students conducting research into climate change. She is working on several initiatives focusing on sustainability, as part of FDU’s strategic plan.
