Applying for Grants

Securing grant funding is pivotal for advancing research and scholarly endeavors at Fairleigh Dickinson University (FDU). The Office of Grants and Sponsored Projects (GSP) is committed to guiding faculty and staff through the grant application process, from conceptualization to submission.

Before Applying for Grants

Developing a compelling and fundable research concept is the first step. GSP offers consultations to assist in refining your ideas, aligning them with potential funding opportunities, and navigating relevant policies and procedures. Given the diversity of research projects, requirements, and deadlines will vary, early engagement with GSP is recommended to ensure compliance and competitiveness.

Funding Opportunities

  • Internal Funding Opportunities: Learn about university-sponsored programs that support research, scholarship, professional development, and pilot projects.
  • External Funding:
    • GrantForward: A comprehensive database where users can search for funding opportunities across all fields, including sciences, humanities, and arts. It aggregates grants from federal, state, foundation, and institutional sponsors.
    • gov: A centralized portal offering access to information on over 1,000 federal grant programs. It serves as a common platform for federal agencies to post discretionary funding opportunities and for grantees to find and apply for them.

How to Submit Grants

Once a funding opportunity is identified and a proposal developed, adherence to FDU’s internal submission procedures is crucial. The 3-2-3 Grant Submission Policy ensures proposals align with institutional priorities, allow adequate time for review, and maintain submission quality.

Internal Authorization (3-2-3 Grant Submission Policy)

  1. Notify your Dean/Director and Chair (if applicable) at least three weeks before the application deadline. This ensures alignment with institutional strategic goals and confirms any institutional commitments. The Notice of Intent to Apply (NOI) must be submitted through the FDU Grant Portal.
  2. Notify the Office of Grants and Sponsored Projects (GSP) at least two weeks before the application deadline. This allows GSP to review grant guidelines, determine submission requirements, and develop a submission plan. All proposals must be routed through the NOI system.
  3. Submit final proposal documents to GSP at least three business days before the agency deadline. Final documents must be received by noon three business days prior to the submission deadline to allow time for review and final submission.

Proposals that do not meet the 3-business-day deadline will be considered “at risk.” GSP cannot guarantee these proposals will be submitted on time or that they will be error-free. Additionally, “at-risk” proposals will not be prioritized over timely submissions. Frequent late submissions may require a consultation with GSP before new proposals are accepted.

Electronic Submission

Many funding agencies require electronic proposal submissions. GSP facilitates this process to ensure proposals meet agency guidelines and are submitted through the appropriate platforms. Examples of common funding agencies and their submission portals include:

  • National Institutes of Health (NIH): ASSIST or gov
  • National Science Foundation (NSF): gov or FastLane
  • Department of Education (ED): G5 Grants Management System
  • National Endowment for the Humanities (NEH): gov
  • Private Foundations and Corporate Sponsors: Varies by funder; often via email, online portals, or Grants.gov
